The whole world is on alert amid the COVID-19 outbreak. We wash our hands more frequently than ever, and we wear face masks everywhere we go even though they cost an arm and a leg. You wonder … is there more that we can do? There certainly is.

Every time we go out, we risk bringing all sorts of bacteria and viruses home with us. Here are a few things that we can do to prevent that from happening.

  1. Take off shoes before you enter home. Spray shoe soles with 1:49 diluted bleach and let dry before taking them in. Place sanitized shoes into a plastic bag.
  2. Spray doormat regularly with diluted bleach.
  3. Wash hands properly: wet hands with running water, then apply soap and lather well for at least 20 seconds. Make sure you lather your palms, between fingers, the backs of your hands, as well as your wrists. Rinse thoroughly under clean running water. Dry hands with a clean towel or paper towel.
  4. Remove the mask by touching the ear loops only. Wrap and dispose of the mask properly; clean your hands.
  5. Change clothes immediately after you get home.

Think you’re safe once you’re home? Not quite. Before you sit back and relax, make sure you take care of these germ hotspots lurking in your home first.

  1. Door handles - germs and viruses do live on surfaces
  2. Cell phones - a study showed that cell phones carried more bacteria than toilet bowls
  3. TV remotes
  4. Keyboards
  5. Sinks and taps
