Survival skills
What if you get lost, find yourself trapped or experience extreme weather during your outing? After you’ve called for help, here are tips to keep you alive while waiting for your rescue, which may not arrive for up to days in the worst scenario.
Mental state
When you find yourself in a less-than-ideal situation, don’t panic. Focus on what you can do to survive. Stay calm and positive. Channel your thoughts to what can be accomplished to keep you safe.
Shelter
Use sticks, leaves or bark to construct your shelter. For an insulated shelter, one that is just big enough to help keep your body heat from escaping is good enough. For a shade shelter, make sure there’s an airflow.
Water
Collect water from rain, dew, plants, and grasses. If possible, boil water for at least 60 seconds.
Fire
Learn various ways to start a fire without using a lighter or matches prior to your trip.
Knots
Bowline and double half hitch are the two knots that would come in handy in a survival situation. Learn them before your trip.
Spear
Learn how to make a spear out of sticks. It can help you find food in the wild.
Survival skills are like insurance. Make sure you have them before you need them!
